DAW

What is a DAW ?

Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) is an application that allows you to create and record music. You can record and manipulate acoustic and electronic sounds and instruments by using digital audio aspects of a DAW. You can also record and manipulate all types of MIDI information.

Here s an example of  a DAW

I have many demonstrations of them on this website for our members

Digital Performer (DP) is made by MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn) and has been a player in the DAW world for a long time. It was originally called Performer when it functioned just as a MIDI sequencer in the 80s for many of those great film scores that we all love. MOTU added Digital to the name when they added digital audio recording to the program. DP used to be a Mac only DAW, but recently added a Windows version to the excitement of many users. DP incorporates a digital audio processor, MIDI sequencer, virtual instrument, and music notation editor. It has always been on the forefront of new features and functionality of DAWs, being one of the first to add features like pitch correction and convolution reverb. DP has always been a composer’s program making it a favorite of film and media composers. This is because of its great MIDI sequencer and integrated notation editor. It is also very customizable to the user’s production style with a fully configurable mixer and programmable key chains.

DP is very well rounded though with audio editing features that rival the ease of Pro Tools. It has had a drop in popularity over the past few years, but the recent move to having a Windows version seams to be turning things around. It is really stable with great features and rock solid performance.

FL Studio

Plug-In: VST
Driver: ASIO
Price: $199

Image-Line’s FL Studio (formerly known as Fruity Loops) is very popular as a starter DAW because it is inexpensive and easy to learn. FL Studio is Windows only and sadly is often passed around for free from user to user. This adds to its popularity, but hurts the creators. It is inexpensive from $49 for a simple version to $299 for a decked out version. It is very popular among high school and college students doing MIDI and loop-based production. There are some professional producers who use FL Studio, but the key to getting professional sounding productions from FL Studio is using 3rd party samples. All of the stock sounds are over-used, familiar and not terribly amazing.

The sequencer is setup similar to a drum sequencer (a pattern-based sequencer) on a sixteenth note grid, so it is great for ‘making beats’ and is therefore insanely popular in hip-hop and rap genres. Many arguments rage between current and former FL Studio users about using it to produce professional music. The truth is that FL Studio can produce a professional product if the user is good enough, but there is a world of advanced features, higher quality processors and sounds in other DAWs that could take that ‘good’ user to an even higher level.

Hauptwerk

Hauptwerk is a computer program from Milan Digital Audio that allows the playback or live performance of pipe organ music using MIDI and recorded sound samples.

JS

1. An audio plug-in format created by Cockos
2. Plug-in format used in Reaper to allow the user to create custom plug-in effects.

Knackbass

KNACKBASS, in technical jargon, was characteristic of Kaempfert’s SWING sound. The idea behind it was to have a bass sound that you could hear through small radio speakers.

The “Knack-Bass” is a distinctive percussive bass sound that was developed by German musician Miloslav Ladislav “Ladi” Geisler. Geisler is best known for his work with pop musicians like Bert Kaempfert, James Last, and Freddy Quinn. The Knack-Bass helped popularize the Bert Kaempfert Orchestra.

kontakt

Kontakt is powerful sample-based software made by Native Instruments. It’s one of the most popular audio-based software samplers and can be found in almost all music production studios around the world.
