Magix Acid Pro (originally owned by Sonic Foundry, then Sony, and now Magix) was the original loop production program. It allowed users to toss any loop on the timeline and have the loops automatically conform to the key and tempo of the project (or the first loop). Over the years Acid Pro has become a full DAW with multi-track audio recording and MIDI functionality. These features continue to be developed, but Acid Pro still is first and foremost a loop-based creation program. MIDI and audio recording functionality simply doesn’t compete with most of the other DAWs on the market.

ARP

An ARP is a chord in which the notes are played sequentially. Traditionally, this is achieved by an organist choosing which notes to play, but since the advent of the synthesizer, this job can now be performed electronically. Indeed, as well as many synths and organs, most DAWs have an on-board arpeggiator tool of some sort.

ARPEGGIATION

An arpeggio is when the notes of a chord are performed one after the other instead of all at the same time. To clarify, a chord is three or more notes that are played at the same time. If the notes of a chord are broken up and played from low to high or high to low, the chord becomes an arpeggio.

ASIO

(Audio Stream    Input/Output)

1. An audio interface driver protocol created by Steinberg.
2. Allows audio interfaces to connect to and be controlled by a computer.

ASIO is a PC audio driver technology developed by Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH (and since adopted across the pro-audio industry) that allows audio software to communicate directly with connected audio hardware with extremely low latency, high channel count, and bit-transparent transfer of data.

ASIO4ALL

What is ASIO4ALL?

Most DAW’s require using an ASIO driver, which helps your computer communicate with connected audio devices correctly and provide low latency recording. ASIO Drivers will bridge the gap between your computer’s sound card and your DAW. If you don’t own an audio interface, or if your interface is class-compliant (no native ASIO driver), you will want the third-party driver called ASIO4ALL. It’s also a very handy troubleshooting tool if you’re having issues with your sound devices or a manufacturer’s ASIO driver.

AU

2. Plug-in format used by many DAWs, including Logic Pro, Live, Digital Performer, and Studio One.
